Media Icons – Jane Velez Mitchell

Just a few months ago Jane Velez Mitchell was a surefire candidate for our blog’s Media Jerks list.

At the time, we had had enough of her screaming and just couldn’t stand her blazing menacing eyes, flared nostrils and loud mouth. She always seemed to be in a raging fight with the television and her audience.

We felt she was either trying too hard to be like Nancy Grace,  to please Nancy Grace or to show the public that she was just like Nancy Grace, but more aggressive. So she lost us as a viewing audience. And to make matters worse, we took issue with the way she covered the Michael Jackson molestation trial.

But something strange happened on her way to the Media Jerks List.

One night, while flipping channels, we briefly stopped and watched “Issues” on HLN and were shocked to see a very DIFFERENT Jane.  We marveled at what appeared to be a STILL feisty, but softer, gentler and caring Jane Velez Mitchell…and we liked it!

She seemed to have found her niche – genuine champion of women andchildren, some of this country’s most ignored; a fierce warrior in the escalated violence perpetrated by lowlife scum against them.

She has clearly distanced herself from, and bypassed, the self-serving drama queen, Nancy Grace, who has continued to spew self-indulgent garbage on a daily basis.

As Jane takes a stand on some of the most disturbing issues of the day, we share her opinions and concerns. We appreciate how genuinely emotionally charged she really is in her fight for the underdog and for justice…and it’s not just for “show.”

Her blazing menacing eyes have turned into passionate pools of justifiable indignation. She has developed an air of confidence, a cocksure attitude that we admire. She has nothing to prove anymore. She has found her footing.

Additionally, Jane is an award-winning television journalist and author, whose recent accomplishments include the Ruby Award by Soroptimist International in January 2010 for her “War on Women” coverage on her television show and the Genesis Award for her show “Issues” in 2010. In 2009, she added New York Times Best Seller to her list of credits with her memoir on addiction recovery titled, “iWant: My Journey from Addiction and Overconsumption to a Simpler, Honest Life.”

We recognize Jane Velez Mitchell also because she has dedicated most of her time and resources to various charitable and humane causes, she is an animal rights advocate and has triumphed in her battle with alcohol addiction to emerge as an admirable role model for others.

Although all is not totally forgiven on the MJ issue, we salute you, Jane Velez-Mitchell as a Media Icon and we say, “Keep up the good work.”

I so love JVM. She rocks!

  2. Marly says:

I like your article on Jane Velez Mitchell. I hated her after the Michael Jackson coverage and I too stopped watching her when I thought she was trying too hard to be like the self egotistic, people seeking, hypocritical, crocodile teary Nancy Grace. I always thought that that b*tch had nothing on her, but… oh well. So now I will start watching her programs again but I will never like that beaver ugly Dianne Diamond. I love you’ll blog. Keep up the good work.

  3. E. Rollings says:

Jane Velez Mitchell rocks and I love her show. She finally got from under Nancy Grace’s shoes. HOORAY.

  4. Karma Conscious says:

I am so glad that someone is putting a voice to the abuse women and children are going through at the hands of men. I cannot wait to hear her comments on Mel Gibson.

  5. Queen Bee says:

I applaud Jane for all the good work she has done and is doing BUT I do not think she is media icon. There are so many better deserving people out there than her. This time I think you Caribbean gals got it wrong. The past ones have been dead on. Cannot wait to see who else is on the list. Great blog.

  6. Cynthia says:

Thank you for saluting Jane Velez Mitchell. She is overshadowed by morons like Nancy Grace and she deserves an Emmy for the great work she is doing. You guys should start a campaign on her behalf since she’s a media icon and all now.

  7. Soupou says:

I’m sorry but I couldn’t stand the way she pimped her book on her show every single night and on every other show where she got an opportunity and the thing is it didn’t even reach number one. She still annoys me and I think she hoodwinked you bright ladies.

  8. excuse me says:

her eyes are still evil. look at her ladies she scares the sh*t out of me. i’ll take nancy grace any day.

  9. flower child says:

i agree she has changed and i love her. big fan. a bit premature for icon status but definately one of the most remarkable for the work she’s doing for women and children.

  10. Pipi M. says:

She deserves an EMMY for her work. She’s the best and most genuine thing on HLN. Sleazebiz Tonight, Joy HaHa, Nancy UglyFace and the lot are crappy shows and need to go. Jane stands out. Good choice ladies.

  11. Cheryl says:

Who does your caricatures for you guys? I love them. A blind man can see that’s Jane. Go Jane go.

  12. Whoa says:

what are you guys drinking? nancy grace is the BEST thing on television. get a life.

  13. caroline says:

Both Nancy Grace and Jane are fine women. I disagree with you about Nancy.

  14. Doreen B. says:

I used to dislike that big mouth and menacing eyes too but if you say she has changed I now will watch her show and pay attention to her new softer side and I will let you know if I agree with you.

  15. Sandra G. says:

I saw her show maybe for about 5 minutes and it was a total put off with her “on your face attitude”. After reading this article, I’ll give her another 5 minutes of my time to prove myself wrong.

  16. Barker says:

Jane is the jewel in HLN’s crown. It’s time they get rid of that footman Nancy.

  17. summerglo says:

I met Jane a long long long time ago and found her to a veeery nice lady. Keep up the good work Jane.

  18. Spicy says:

No, no, no! She’s still too loud. NOOOO!

  19. Drew says:

Everybody is just talking the talk but Jane walks the walk. I really admire and respect the work she is doing for battered and abused women and children. Jane is the only one that put the missing black woman, Matrice who vanished after being discharged from a police station in Malibu story in the spotlight. Nobody else did anything. To me she’s an icon just for that.

  20. Meagan says:

    her teeth are too big.

  21. Sam says:

You ladies did a great job. This is the exact image of Jane Velez.

  22. Oxyrich says:

Jane is good but what has she done to be a media icon? Gimme a break.

  23. Popeye says:

All these people have no class. Jane has come a long way and I agree with you only after reading her book.

  24. Candy says:

  25. Stacey says:

Why didn’t you say anything about Jane being gay? She’s a proud gay woman and that’s part of who she is.

  26. medved says:

sorry she looks like a horse but that nancy grace sure looks like a donkey. sorry shrek.

  27. Amedh says:

Jane fights for gay rights, animal rights, civil rights, women and children’s rights and she’s all right with me. Congratulations.

  28. Josue Merrick says:

To Stacey put a sock in it. Being gay is not all that should define JVM. I believe these fabulous ladies honored here for her accomplishments, not her orientation or sexual preference. Being gay is not a flag to be waved around just because and should not be the first thing that defines someone, no more than color or wealth. You ladies rock. Great choice.

  29. Katherin Salvage says:

Jane continues to impress and inspire me to go beyond myself and do for others. An honor well bestowed.

  30. Abram M. says:

    I disagree, she still screams.

  31. victoria says:

Jane Velexz has passion and heart. she’s the only one that gives people like Mitrice Richardson mother and father a chance to let us know what’s happening with the police. Now that we know she’s dead its sad. Jane really cares and she deserves this award.

  32. Dalegowski says:

She should still be on the jerks list. she screams too much and think she’s some big sh*t.

  33. Linkoln says:

Jane is my all time favrite tv host. y’all just haters.

  34. Augustine Munsell says:

the homophobes are at it again. jane doesn’t care with you doushebags she’s laughing all the way to the bank cause she is powerful, beautiful & talented.

  35. Olinda1968 says:

    Way to go Jane.

  36. Bigmouth Luanne says:

Michael Jackson put himself in a legal battle, Jane was just reporting. Don’t hate the messenger ladies.

  37. Scarlett says:

nany grace doesnt’ deserve to be mentioned in the same breath or sentence as jane velez mitchell, “friend”. :-)

  38. Milan says:

I wonder if Oprah ever will do anything else than TV. Jane can replace the big O anytime. She has what it takes.

  39. Sylvia says:

I predict more awards for Jane, Emmys and Peabody. She’s an excellent journalist. Congratulations Jane!

Jane is fly. Your best most authentic media icon so far.
