Six foot five, good looking, and successful – is this what makes Tyler Perry a media icon? We don’t think so. It is his determination to overcome his difficulties, sticking to his faith, and believing in himself, even in the toughest moments.

After Tyler attempted suicide due to a childhood trauma, where he was a victim of physical abuse as well as sexual molestation, he understood that he had to take the reins of his life in order to defeat the ghosts of his troubled past and set on a journey of a thousand miles, which began with a single step.

Being a high school drop out, Tyler quickly realized that it took lots of (more…)

Immigration Reform – “The White Washing of America” – By Sandra Lord

By SANDRA LORD – Caribbean

When I attended performing arts school in New York, each semester I found myself one of few black students in the classroom. The rest of the students were primarily Caucasian, many from Europe and Canada.

I thought nothing much of it until one day a fellow classmate from Holland asked me if I knew how she could get her Green Card. I was taken off guard. The fact is, until that moment, it had never dawned on me that any of my fellow classmates was in the U.S. illegally – after all, they were um…white.

It turned out that several of them were here illegally, including those from CANADA.

I’ve never stopped thinking about that for like many Americans, I had (more…)

Media Jerks – TMZ Staff

THE MOST ANNOYING MEDIA PERSONALITIES:

TMZ STAFF

While we give this week’s Media Icon honor to Harvey Levin, creator of the ground-breaking TMZ entertainment magazine TV show and website, unfortunately, we have to give the Media Jerks honor to his underling on-camera staff.

Now, here are a bunch who, as we say in the Caribbean, “left school too early.” (more…)

Media Icons – Harvey Levin
By Sandra & Allison Lord

THE MOST REMARKABLE MEDIA PERSONALITIES:

Some may scoff at the idea that Harvey Levin, television producer, lawyer, legal analyst and celebrity reporter is “the guy who rules Hollywood,” but that’s how he was introduced at a convention of powerful entertainment lawyers last year.

While some of the worst epithets have been leveled against him and his brand of tabloid television, and while we didn’t need another entertainment show on the air, one has to commend Harvey Levin for co-founding the hottest news and gossip website and its spinoff syndicated television series, TMZ. Harvey’s TMZ, which stands for the Thirty Mile Zone surrounding the Hollywood area, the epicenter of celebrity life, work and play, has revamped the format of the traditional entertainment magazine show to become one of the world’s most quoted sources of entertainment news. These days, everyone, including traditional news outlets quote and credit both the website and TV show regularly.

TMZ landed the scoop of the decade when it broke the news of the death of music icon and King of Pop, Michael Jackson, before it was officially confirmed. (more…)

Queen of Leftovers – Sandra Lord’s Post

By SANDRA LORD – Caribbean

My Country’s Organic Kingdom

I NEVER KNEW THE CONCEPT OF LEFTOVERS until I came to this country. Now, I’m the Queen of Leftovers and the Doggy Bag – primarily because my hectic schedule leaves little room for daily cooking; but I have been able to strike a happy balance between my new eating habits and the healthy food and cooking traditions I learned as a child growing up in the Caribbean.

I was watching Oprah a couple weeks ago and was intrigued by the topic of conversation with Michael Pollan that centered on the “processed food diet that dominates American supermarkets and how it compares to more natural diets in other parts of the world.” It took me on a nostalgic journey to the natural foods grown in my country.

Although the Caribbean is generally viewed as Third World, we were raised with a lot of the organic foods that many Americans crave today. On any given day, (more…)

Media Jerks – Sarah Palin

SARAH PALIN

How has Sarah Palin managed to seduce so many people into thinking she could conceivably be the President of the United States and Leader of the Free World?

There are a few things in her favor: her feistiness – she gives as good as she gets; her sense of humor – she knows how to laugh at herself and minimize the effect of a multitude of humiliating faux pas; her marketing skills – she has perfected the art of playing the media like a hooker practiced in the art of seduction and has them eating out of her hand; her brazenness – she has a unique ability to look you squarely in the face, with unwavering eyes and that beaming, shameless smile while she gives uninformed, meaningless, answers to pointed questions; oh, yeah, and she’s sexier than McCain, Newt, Giuliani or any of the Republicans to boot!

But none of these things is presidential. (more…)

• OPRAH

Oprah Winfrey, Ellen Degeneres and Whoopi Goldberg have such a great sense of humor and joie-de-vivre personalities, we often joke that they must have Caribbean ancestry. Bar none, they are three of the most fascinating (more…)

Sandra’s Post – Mess Up À Trois

– MESS UP À TROIS: LENO, NBC, CONAN…Oh, & LETTERMAN

(©) 2010 Lord Sisters. All Rights Reserved.

It’s so good to see Jay Leno back on the Tonight Show, where he rightfully belongs. Jay’s debut on March 1, as host of the esteemed program for the second time around, beat out all the late night competition, not surprisingly, with an estimated 6.6 million viewers.

For several weeks I have been seething about the treatment Jay has received at the hands of the media, fellow comedians and other celebrities regarding the O’Brien-NBC saga.

Even the proud little peacock on the NBC logo, still justifiably hiding itself in shame, could have told network executives that the Jay Leno-Conan O’Brien switcheroo was a disaster in the making. The signs of a debacle were so obvious, it’s amazing NBC execs did not see it coming!

That fiasco sparked a lot of anger in Hollywood and most of it seemed have been directed at Leno. People seemed to be siding with Conan and searching for reasons to vilify Jay. I just didn’t get it!

I like Jay Leno, plain and simple – more than Letterman and more than Conan and I don’t particularly care to hear anything negative about him.

I have read and listened to bashings by a hurt Howard Stern who has (more…)
